It’s that time of the year again, no not Christmas, HALLOWEEN! To kick start the spooky festivities this year we at House Buy Fast have put together a list of the top 10 most haunted properties & places in the UK.
I must actually admit I havn’t ordered this list in any partiular order, purely because I want YOU to choose what your top 10 out of this list is!
1 – Borley Rectory, Essex
Even though this building has actually been demolished since 1939 the grounds around the Borley Rectory have been long touted as one of the most haunted places in the UK if not the most haunted.
The Rectory has a long list of ghostly sightings and goings-on so bear with me for the amount of information about to come your way! One of the earliest recorded sightings is one of the most famous, a nun, she is seen roaming the grounds looking for her lover who was a Monk.
Other paranormal activity includes mysterious footsteps, doorbells ringing and poltergeist activity. I could go on about this property forever but I must move on!
2 – The Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire
Built in 1145, priests used the inn as a keeping house for slaves and workers who helped construct St. Mary Church.
The most popular myth around this property is that a witch was burned at the stake in the 1500s, she even has a room named after her called ‘The Witch’s Room’. She has been seen standing inside the room and making knocking sounds during the night.
Other elements that add to the paranormal activity include the fact the inn was also used for Devil worship.
3 – Pendle Hill, Lancashire
Let’s jump straight into this one as it’s the most interesting.
Twelve witches nicknamed The Pendle Hill Witches were accused of murdering ten people, which ended up with ten of the witches being hanged. These witches are said to still haunt the grounds in a poltergeist manner, people feel very uneasy when on the grounds, feeling anger towards fellow people and even some reports said they were feeling strangled by unseen hands.
This definitely gets my vote for the scariest property in the UK.
4 – Berry Pomeroy Castle, Devon
Built in 1305 by the order of Henry de Pomeroy, this castle is one of the most active in the UK for paranormal activity.
The most reported ghostly activity is that of the ‘Blue Lady’ and ‘White Lady’. The White Lady is the soul of Margaret Pomeroy, it is said that she haunts Margaret’s Tower; she also has been seen waving to visitors. The Blue Lady has been said to lure people deep into the castle and get them lost.
Other activity includes voices, cold spots and strange lights.
5 – Woodchester Mansion, Gloucestershire
There’s a lot of paranormal activity within this mansion so let’s get to the nitty gritty of the sightings. A strange figure has been seen standing at the mansion’s gates; a phantom horseman has also been seen on the mansion grounds.
One of the creepiest is the ghost of a young girl who has been seen playing and running around on the stairs of the mansion. Visitors have also said that they have collapsed and been attacked by ghostly apparitions.
6 – Pluckley Village, Kent
Okay, so this isn’t a specific property but this small village boasts the title of the most haunted village in England. Estimated at 12 to 16 active ghosts, it seems the surrounding area is full of paranormal activity.
The most popular tale from the village is that of the screaming man, he is thought to of fallen to his death doing brickwork.
Lastly but not least, The Red Lady has been seen haunting St.Nicholas, her legend overlaps with that of the previously mentioned White Lady.
7 – Athelhampton House, Dorchester
Another house regarded as one of the most haunted in England. A dark apparition has been seen walking the grounds of the building by the housemaids.
One of the most well-known ghosts of Athelhampton House is that of the pet ape that was accidently stuck in a secret passage behind the Great Chamber. The ape has never been seen but the noise of him scratching the panels of the Great Chamber to escape is often heard.
8 – Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire
A property based in Lancashire, this hall has been at the centre of various paranormal activities. The most famous ghost of this particular establishment is the ‘White Lady’, she is often seen floating down the corridors of the hall and crying for the lover that she lost.
A more gruesome tale was of the beheaded priest who’s blood stain on the floor can still be seen reappearing today.
9 – Chillingham Castle, Northumberland
This castle has been at the centre of much spooky activity, figures such as The White Pantry Ghost has been seen standing in white clothing within the pantry.
Figures are not always seen, voices of two men are often heard talking within the Great Hall of the castle. People visiting the castle have also felt ‘impalpable impressions on the air’, feeling cold is one of the most popular.
10 – 7 Liverpool Terrace, Sussex
Okay I know this isn’t a very famous one but this is where we work and where many spooky things happen! Lucy our resident lead designer has seen our windows that are stiff and only close with force slowly close in front of her eyes.
Jonathan our director has seen shadows quickly move across the hallways and heard noises that resemble voices. There are many stories from us that we can share but I’m afraid that’s all I have time for, if you want to hear more don’t hesitate to email us!
